A Vietnamese head spa (gội đầu dưỡng sinh in Vietnamese) is a slow, reclined hair wash built around a long head, neck and shoulder massage and herbal water. In Da Lat, where evenings are cool, it is one of the most pleasant ways to rest after a day of walking the hills. Here is what to expect, how it compares with Japanese and Korean head spas, and what it costs.

What is a Vietnamese head spa?

You lie on a wash bed with your head over a basin while a therapist massages your scalp, neck and shoulders, then washes your hair, often with water infused with herbs such as soap pod (bồ kết), pomelo peel, lemongrass or ginger. The pace is unhurried: the point is deep rest rather than a quick wash.

Some spas ask you to change into a gown or wrap a towel around you, so your shoulders can be massaged and your top stays dry. If you would rather not, just ask.

How is it different from a Japanese or Korean head spa?

As spas that specialise in head treatments describe them:

  • Japanese head spa grew out of Japan’s hair salon culture: warm water flowing over the scalp, methodical pressure work, sometimes carbonated water. The focus is precise scalp care.
  • Korean head spa is scalp-led: an assessment of your scalp, then exfoliation, steam, treatment products and drying, much like skincare for the scalp.
  • Vietnamese head spa is massage-led, with the longest hands-on time on the scalp, neck and shoulders, and a focus on relaxation.

If your neck and shoulders are stiff from travelling, the Vietnamese style is the one to pick. Many spas blend the three styles, so ask what is included.

What happens during a session

Every spa has its own sequence, but a session usually goes like this:

  1. A short chat about the pressure you like and anything to avoid.
  2. Massage of the head, temples, neck and shoulders.
  3. A first wash to clean the hair and scalp.
  4. A slower second wash with scalp massage.
  5. Herbal rinse or a warm towel wrap, often with more neck and shoulder massage.
  6. A final rinse, then your hair is towel-dried and blow-dried.

How long it takes and what it costs in Da Lat

Prices depend on the length of the session and what it includes. As an example, these are the hair treatments at The Pine Spa & Wellness, with prices in Vietnamese dong (VND):

TreatmentLengthPrice
Relaxing Herbal Hair Wash (Gội Thảo Dược Thông Xanh)45 min159,000 VND
Herbal Head Therapy (Gội Dưỡng Sinh)60 min199,000 VND
Neuro-Calming Head Therapy (Gội Dưỡng Não An Thần)70 min349,000 VND

Is a head spa good for you?

For most healthy people it is a gentle, low-risk way to relax. According to the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), massage may help with neck or shoulder pain, but the benefit may last only a short time, and serious side effects are rare. A head spa is a way to rest, not a medical treatment.

Check with a doctor, or at least tell your therapist, if you:

  • have a wound, rash or infection on your scalp;
  • are pregnant;
  • have high or low blood pressure, or often feel dizzy when you stand up;
  • have recently injured your neck or had surgery on your head or neck.

Tips for your head spa in Da Lat

  • Late afternoon or evening works well, after a day of sightseeing.
  • Avoid going straight after a big meal.
  • Say “nhẹ” for lighter pressure or “mạnh” for firmer: therapists will adjust.
  • Make sure your hair is completely dry before you go out. Da Lat nights are cool, around 13°C in December on average.
  • Book ahead on weekends and holidays.
